Sharq for Citizen Development

“Sharq is a non-profit organisation that works to promote and strengthen pluralism and independent thought throughout the Arab world. We do so by developing opportunities for citizens to learn the skills needed for productive expression and debate and providing opportunities for people to apply such skills and interact fruitfully with others.
Our activities include the provision of training, through workshops and practical work; publishing online and in print, to give individuals a platform and voice; and organizing events that enable exchange and development of ideas and expression.
We have produced written and audio-visual collections of oral histories with dozens of citizens from across the Arab region (including ‘Syrian Voices’ with the Konrad Adenauer Foundation and www.Libya42.org , with the Arab Human Rights Fund); hosted over a dozen debates about culture in times of conflict ( www.SyrianCulture.org , with the Swedish Institute); and trained over a hundred citizen and professional journalists, with the UK Foreign Office.”
